Role: Board Member
The Boards of Directors of Healthier Colorado and the Fund for a Healthier Colorado are seeking new directors to fill open board positions. A description of our family of organizations and director responsibilities is below. If you are interested in joining one of our boards, please indicate your interest by responding via this form.
We are recruiting directors to both of our boards according to applicant interest and the evolving needs of the boards. The Healthier Colorado board is composed of 5 to 13 directors who are appointed by a vote of that board to 3-year terms that can be renewed up to three times (9 years total). The Fund for a Healthier Colorado board is composed of 3 to 9 directors who are appointed by a vote of the board of directors of Healthier Colorado and are not subject to term limits.
Position Description
Directors for both the Healthier Colorado and The Fund for Healthier Colorado’s boards do not receive monetary compensation for their services. While directors on the Healthier Colorado board of directors are sometimes asked to provide direct input or cast votes on matters concerning political candidate elections, the purview of The Fund for a Healthier Colorado’s board of directors reflects the operational boundaries prescribed by the IRS for a 501(c)(3) public charity. This is to say that public policy is a topic of discussion for this board, but the board does not engage in activity that influences political candidate elections. Beyond this distinction, the core duties associated with directors on both boards are essentially identical and are as follows:
- Prepare for, attend, and engage in the regular board of directors meetings, of which there are 4 to 5 per year. These last an average of two hours long, with one of the meetings designated as the annual retreat, which typically lasts about a half day. You are also encouraged to participate in subcommittee activity, special assignments and occasional consultation with the CEO as per your interest and the organization’s needs.
- Throughout the year, including in between board meetings, consume the information necessary to remain knowledgeable about the organization’s finances, programming and strategic interests in order to meet the fiduciary and leadership responsibilities assigned to the board of directors.
- Make your best effort to attend the organization’s various events, especially our annual fundraising event, Believe in Better, and our annual legislative reception.
- Promote the organization within your network and make connections when appropriate to advance the fundraising and strategic interests of the organization.
- Make a financial contribution at a level you deem fit on an annual basis to the organization.
- Maintain the confidentiality of the organization’s work as appropriate.
Who We Are Seeking
Beyond seeking directors who are committed to our mission and who are enthusiastically willing to assume the responsibilities of the position, we want to build a roster of Directors who bring a diversity of relevant expertise to advance the work of the organization. You do not need to be a health policy expert. Examples of desirable topic areas from which prospective directors would be able to lend their skills and experience would include organizational management, business, politics and policy, finance, real estate, law, and life experience that helps inform our pursuit of equity.
We are also interested in a diversity of representation with respect to race, sex, color, creed, national origin, ancestry, age, sexual orientation (including gender identity and gender expression), and disability. As a statewide organization, we also seek representation from communities across Colorado. Our boards are also composed of directors from across the political spectrum, and we aim to maintain that tradition.
About the Healthier Colorado Family of Organizations
Healthier Colorado was the first in what has become a family of organizations that share the same values in serving different functions. Together, we seek to elevate the voices of communities to improve people’s health and well-being. We are recruiting directors for our two boards of directors – Healthier Colorado, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, and The Fund for a Healthier Colorado, a connected 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our whole family of organizations are organized under the governance of these two boards, and a brief description of each is as follows.
Healthier Colorado is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that changes laws so that everybody has the chance to live a healthier life. We lobby at the State Capitol and influence the election process to improve the mental, physical, and social well-being of Coloradans. We work on all the aspects of your life that can make you healthier, including quality, affordable healthcare; access to mental health support; safe and affordable housing, and other economic and educational opportunities.
The Fund for a Healthier Colorado is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that seeks to advance policy that improves the health of our state’s residents. We believe that every Coloradan should have a fair chance at living a healthy life. We engage Coloradans to create a path forward to this goal and educate our state’s decision-makers about action needed to improve our health.
Healthy Air & Water Colorado is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization that mobilizes health professionals to change laws in order to address the impact of climate change on people’s health. Deeply trusted by their communities, health professionals see the consequences that climate change is having on our health every day in their clinics and that’s why their voices influence decision-makers and result in real progress towards protecting public health. This entity is organized as a 501(c)(3) and has an accompanying 501(c)(4) entity called Healthy Air & Water Colorado Action.
Open Answer is a non-partisan, non-profit outreach organization that connects campaigns, candidates, and organizations with the communities they wish to engage. We do this through a series of tactics ranging from face-to-face fundraising to door-to-door get-out-the-vote efforts. Organized as a 501(c)(4) entity, it has a sister 501(c)(3) organization called Open Answer Mobilize.
Colorado’s Health Capitol is a shared workspace for mission-aligned nonprofits who work to elevate health and well-being. Colorado’s Health Capitol is the only mission-driven collaborative space for health and wellbeing advocates in the nation, and serves as a beacon to attract needed attention to Colorado’s health. By collaborating and leveraging collective resources, we can strengthen each organization’s ability to accomplish their respective missions.
