SB18-050: Adding Free-Standing Emergency Departments to CO’s Safe Haven Law

Position: Support

Background: In 2000, Colorado passed a law that allows parents of very young and unharmed newborns to surrender those babies at hospitals and fire stations, without the possibility of any criminal penalties. As of March 2016, 51 babies in Colorado have been safely relinquished.

Summary: SB 50 would expand this law to include free-standing emergency departments as points where babies can be safely surrendered without penalty.
